National service programs are constantly looking for well-organized, meaningful community projects as service opportunities for members. Contact http://www.americorps.org/ to find out how to connect and advertise your volunteer opportunities with programs in your area.

Some AmeriCorps programs focus on youth and the environment. Seek these programs out for experienced volunteers who can help get youth involved and who can bring special skills to your project.

Local note: Phuong Quach, AmeriCorps Alum
In the last build I participated in, my group was assigned to put together Freddy the Fire Engine. We didn't know how confusing and complex it was until we started it, but we put our heads together and managed to complete dear Freddy. Teamwork - a concept that cannot be avoided when building a playground! I am sure the kids at Gate City Nursery are enjoying him out there on the playground. Lately I have been volunteering at these builds on my own. At first I was quite skeptical about it, but the community members that I have worked alongside so far have been spectacular. They are always so nice and friendly to outside volunteers, eager to make a new friend. My fondest memory so far is putting together Freddy the Fire Engine in the rain, wind, hail and sun (all on the same day) with some really great ladies.

If anything, a KaBOOM! build allows AmeriCorps members the opportunity to really work with members of the community who are truly dedicated to seeing change happen in their own backyard, especially if it's for the youth. It's nice "getting things done" with people who are from the community, not just with your team or with the non-profit organization who is sponsoring you. The look on the faces of the children who will be playing on the playground is just the cherry on top of a sundae of new friends and experiences that happen at a playground build.
