Store employees can teach a special class (gardening, woodworking, basic home repair, etc.) with proceeds going toward your project.
Hardware stores can be a great source of skilled volunteers and technical support.
Do they have (or know of) a community tool chest from which you can borrow tools for the build? If not, ask for a donation of tools, materials or garden supplies for landscaping projects.
