Homeless individuals can be very hard-working volunteers. Don't overlook them in terms of volunteer recruitment.
Local note: Jane Duket, St. Ambrose Family Shelter, Dorcester, Mass.
"The homeless families at the St. Ambrose Family Shelter do not have many things to call their own and it was through their involvement and leadership in the playground build that they gained something to be proud of, which is extremely significant in their lives. The dignity lost when a person is homeless is unimaginable to anybody who has not experienced it. Through participation and ownership of projects like these, our clients strengthened their dignity and increased their confidence and self-worth. Tanya, a resident at the shelter, was a build captain who led her team throughout the mixing and pouring of cement. She ended the day with a big hug from her son, who was so proud of his mother. The \KaBOOM! build became an excellent way for the women at the St. Ambrose Family Shelter to gain confidence, self-esteem, and self-worth at a time when it didn't seem possible."
